Dealing With Ash
Ash from coal-fired power stations is nasty stuff!
6bn+ tonnes of it are stockpiled at hundreds of sites around the world already and with new coal power stations coming online every month, this global waste mountain is set to rise dramatically.
For decades energy companies and governments alike have adopted an unsustainable policy of "store and ignore". Following huge fly ash environmental disasters in the US, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has now recognised the scale of the problem and passed legislation to regulate fly ash management. The UK has already had such regulation in place for many years while in Europe regulation varies.
